Our Approach

The BRICK Economic Mobility Lab collaborates with residents to identify and realize educational, career, financial, and health objectives, paving the way to a more opportunity-filled life.

The EML engages in loving, hope-filled partnerships with individuals to develop customized, actionable plans that encompass health, financial education, academic advancement, and career growth. Each participant collaborates with an EML Navigator. There are two types of EML Navigators:

  1. Near-peer professionals with lived experience in navigating education, health, workforce development and/or social services training and skills.
  2. Trained social work professionals, who offer strengths-based coaching to help residents navigate life's systems and challenges.

Rooted in prioritizing the spirit and strength of Newark residents, the EML builds on the pre-existing strengths that individuals bring to the program, recognizing that they are the best agents of change in their own lives. Using evidence-informed modalities like motivational interviewing and stages of change, EML helps participants set and achieve their own goals. The collaborative assessment focuses on housing, essential needs, health, generational wealth, and perceived self-competence, supporting residents in progressing toward holistic thriving and economic stability.
